Task 13 - Advanced Editing Techniques

Learning comment

I found this task very difficult to complete as it really tested my editing skills, however it has definitely boosted my confidence and skill set. There were many things to consider when completing this task such as continuity, which needed to be perfect in order for it to look good. I think I managed to do this pretty well. Furthermore, the clips needed to be cut at just the right time so that it looked seamless. When I edit my music video I will need to implement these key skills into it so that it looks as professional as it can. Transitioning cleanly between scenes and locations will need to be perfect in my music video so i'm going to be using what i have learnt in this task. If I was to complete this task again I would perhaps challenge myself further by trying to film more difficult scenes such as jumping into a car, as this will develop my editing skills for future use.

To improve our green screen skills for future use, we decided to carry out this extra task. We had no previous green screen experience before completing this task, so we found it quite difficult to do it. However, we did think that it turned out quite well, and it looks quite realistic. Because th green screen wasn't tight enough, there are visible creases in the background. Completing this task will definitely help us when doing ones in the future.

Task 13 - Advanced Editing Techniques

Learning comment

Whilst doing this task I have leant how to use jump cuts to create frustration and tension. By cutting clips down and making them very short, it speeds up the sequence and makes a long period of time seem much shorter. This can show frustration or just speed up a longer process so there isn't minutes long of footage of a character doing mundane things. I have learnt when to cut different clips and how long to make them in order to achieve maximum results. Adding back ground sound and sound effects can also build tension and create a certain atmosphere

Task 12 - Photo Shoot and Edit for a Digipak

Learning comment

This was my first time using photoshop, and I found it quite hard house all the features and create what I wanted. However, I did learn quite quickly and am pretty happy with the result. I took inspiration from Arctic Monkey's album "Whatever people say I am that's what I'm not" and decided to put my own twist on it. I duplicated the image of my model and decreased the opaqueness of the image each time. I felt like this was more interesting than the original and looks good. I also added fire into the background to make it more dramatic and i think it reflects the album.

Task 10 - 30 Cut Chorus

30 Shot Chorus from Tom Cornock on Vimeo.

Learning comment

I found this task very difficult to complete as we had to create a narrative that we could implement 30 cuts into. This is hard because its a very quick sequence and a short amount of time. This led to some continuity issues as we were trying to include 30 different cuts. We tried to use a wide range of shots as this is what we are planning to do in our final piece, such as high angle shots, low angle shots, wide shots, and close up shots. Furthermore, trying to work with the beat of the song was hard because of the amount of shots we had to include. There are many things we could improve on, such as neatening the camera work so that we can't see our camera man in the reflection and fingers in the edge of the shot. The continuity could be better, although I think out narrative is good as we had clear structure.

Task 9 - Lip Syncing Battle

Learning comment

This task was challenging because it was out first time lip syncing. We had to make sure we exaggerated mouth movements so it looked like we were singing which i thought we mostly did well, although at times the lip syncing was weak and it's hard to tell what i being said. Another difficult aspect was making sure the music was in time with our lip syncing which was hard because we had to use lots of clips. There are also times where we are stood static at the start of the shot which looks unprofessional and takes away the fluency.

Task 8 - Music Consumption

Learning Comments

We took part in an interview and asked each other questions about music videos, including which videos we watch, why we watch them, what we like about them and if we download them. This process was important in understanding what the appealing aspects of music videos are and what people our age thought about music videos. When we make our own videos, this information will help us to know what we need to include in the video and how to carry it out in order to make the most entertaining video we can. We found out that we like narrative videos, as they are more entertaining to watch and we can resonate with them more.

In this task we give each other feedback on what we liked and disliked about previous students music videos. This gave us a chance to identify what audiences like about music videos and what to include and not include in our video. This was a very useful task to complete and will able us to know the most enjoyable and entertaining aspects of music videos. Everything we liked about previous students videos we will try in integrate into our own video in our unique way.

Learning Comment

Upon completing this task, I have learnt how different people interpret music videos using several different theories. This has made me think about how my video could be interpreted and is something that i will need to take into consideration what I produce my video. Different social class and other factors have an impact on how people view music videos and it is important that I think about this when creating mine.
